A coin with the face of an alien was shared online by a coin enthusiast.
He told Newsweek, “I was looking through a big bag of quarter rolls, opening them one by one to hunt for older pieces with high silver content.
“I was immediately astonished by a strange coin in one of the rolls that had a bust of an alien on it. In stark contrast to the bust of Washington on the other coins, it stood out.
The word “Liberty” and the year 1937 were written on the alien’s face, respectively.
But this specific coin is thought to be what is known as a “hobo coin,” not a piece of money from another planet.
Between 1913 and 1980, it is estimated that approximately 200,000 classic hobo coins featuring individually made works of art by the homeless were produced.
They were frequently created by using knives or other tools to modify pre-existing coins.
However, it turned out to be a ‘hobo nickel’ when he took it to a local pawn shop.
“He reassured me that the federal reserve isn’t being run by aliens and that the coin isn’t all that rare. He identified it as a hobo nickel, worth around $10-$20 to collectors,” Jordan said.
The Hobo nickels were created by homeless people who carved out a number of designs on the coins and it was quite popular in the 20th century. A user on Reddit even found a link to Hobo nickels being sold on eBay and the average price was around $14, or roughly Rs 1,100.
